dear, i’m glad that you had a good weekend evening, esp. with music. but pls pardon me for disagreeing with you as follows:

Kitaro’s music, in its outlook, seems to have mysteriously and spiritually (ta^m linh) Oriental characteristics; but actually, it’s an alluring disguise. I would suggest a comparison with {the martial arts on action movies vs. the *true* martial arts that are practised in genuine dojos or pagodas}. His music, in a sense, is a *dangerous disguise* of the appreciation of the Orient and the nature.

I may include some more convincing reasons for my judgement. He *overuses* digital sounds and synthesizers to model the nature and the mystical feelings; but come on, it’s a wrong approach. If you’ve ever listened to a strong wind blown in a dark&cold night, or imagined urself in a winding desert, it shld be a feeling that is *totally different* from his music. The same applies to other features of nature that he tried to model. Besides, he didn’t go to university, his musical training is very informal; he may play several instruments, but it doesn’t mean that he played them well & in a correct manner.

Yanni’s music is better to listen to. Yanni played with prestigious orchestra (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), good musicians and conductors, and was allowed to perform in sacred places like Forbidden City (China) & Taj Mahal (India).

you may be right about Kitaro music, Hieu. However, who says you have to go to university, to have formal training, and to play with prestigious orchestras to play music well???????

I’m not a huge fan of Kitaro, and I also don’t understand his music and listened to very few songs. But “If you’ve ever listened to a strong wind blown in a dark&cold night, or imagined urself in a winding desert, it shld be a feeling that is *totally different* from his music.” Your listening to the wind and your feeling for it should be different from that of his or that of Yanni, for that matter. He used one way to express his feeling/though, so did Yanni. You may not like his way, and you may like Yanni’s way more. But I don’t think it’s appropriate to call Kitaro’s music “dangerous disguise”.

Nghia: looking forward to your blog on Yanni and Pink Floyd. I was drunk the other night, and listened to “Comfortably Numb”, it was a great feeling!!!

this is not the right place, but since you said you’re excited about quantum physics, I can’t help it. This is an article about a talk by Sir Michael Atiyah, http://www.ams.org/notices/200606/comm-walker.pdf. I bet you and Hieu will find it interesting. Let me know what you guys think.

“You choose what you want to see”: nice correlation =D. Va.n su ta.i ta^m, thien tai, thien tai (hehe, doc blog may xong tao da dac dao :P)

dude: Happy New Year =) .
My main point is that if you want to model the nature, synthesizers shldn’t be a good choice. Acoustically, artificial sounds have lost many “natural harmonics” of the lively phenomenon, hence they sound very fake. BUT Kitaro *overuses* these effects in his compositions. Pls think of the “ro’c ra’ch” sound of a natural spring on a mountain, or the howling wind in the darkness, and listen again to Kitaro. Don’t you feel that Kitaro’s sound is so fake, so artificial ?!! **Again, the same applies to the seemingly mystical features in Kitaro’s music.** If you turn on some Yanni’s, do you feel that Yanni depicts these feelings much more naturally, through his harmonious orchestration, from the string section to the drum, and even human voice?

Why do I use “dangerous disguise”? Using Kitaro’s music to describe / to feel the spiritual Orient is just like using the film “Hero” to exemplify the Chinese philosophy of hero, war and culture !!! It’s so far, far, far away from the authentic, from the genuine !!!
